Google Caffeine: A Faster Way to Index Content on the Internet

Google has been living off Caffeine since the middle of last month. On June 8 they launched their new system for indexing content on the Internet. The old system used to index every couple of weeks, but now it is almost indexing in real time. That’s why the name Caffeine was such an appropriate fit.  ”Caffeine provides 50 percent fresher results for web searches than our last index, and it’s the largest collection of web content we’ve offered. Whether it’s a news story, a blog or a forum post, you can now find links to relevant content much sooner after it is published than was possible ever before,” Google said in a recent blog posting.

How To Handle Twitter Identity Theft: Do Nothing About It

Well, not exactly. #oilspill is one of the top 10 trending terms on Twitter right now, and thanks to  people behind the Twitter account @BPGlobalPR (among others) it will probably remain there until there is a real solution for the oil currently spewing in the Gulf of Mexico at a rate of 5,000 barrels a day. That account was created just 2 weeks ago, and has already garnered over 121,000 followers (including myself).

Real-time Search Results in Action

Measuring the Brand

For those agencies and marketers with a total focus on ROI, sometimes branding campaigns can be confounding.  How can I measure the effectiveness of my branding campaign to optimize performance?  The answer is something we call a “Brand Metrics Calculator”.  A Brand Metrics Calculator will convert all brand touch points into a common unit, and thus a common financial value.  This way the marketer can determine the effectiveness of multiple brand touch points and shift budget accordingly, as they would say in determining that a paid search campaign generates leads at a lower cost than say a banner campaign.   While this is not by any means an exact science, it allows the marketer to make data-driven decisions on how to invest marketing funds. Google and Bing Go Social – Twitter and Facebook Updates to be Included in Search Results

After recent back-to-back announcements, Google disclosed plans to incorporate Twitter into their search results and Microsoft unveiled intentions of featuring both Twitter and Facebook in Bing results. Google will be integrating Tweets into their search results while Bing, at least currently, is using a subpage for searching tweets. This will enable Web browsers to view tweets relevant to their queries in the search engines, creating a more robust search experience. (more…)

Customer Service, Twitter and the Streisand Effect

The Chicago Tribune recently reported on a Chicago landlord that filed suit against a tenant for tweeting one evening about her moldy apartment.

Horizon Reality claims that the tenant’s post, “who said sleeping in a moldy apartment was bad for you? Horizon realty thinks its okay” was “maliciously and wrongfully published” and the tenant allowed “the tweet to be spread throughout the world.” (more…)
