What Cyber Monday and Black Friday Says About '09 Shopping Trends
Black Friday and Cyber Monday are key consumer spending days for both marketers and shoppers alike. They are the Friday and Monday following Thanksgiving that mark the kick off of the holiday shopping season. Because consumer shopping accounts for up to 70%* of economic activity, the amount spent on holiday shopping sends a strong message about consumer confidence and economic strength. Particularly after facing a tough economic year, we’re hoping to see an upward trend in spending this holiday season and start 2010 on a more positive note.
Happily, Cyber Monday sales seem to have increased 5% from last year, with consumers spending $887 million as reported by online retailers, comScore and The Wall Street Journal. Although the amount spent per online shopper on the 30th fell 2%, the total number of online shoppers increased 6% from the previous year. Black Friday saw bleaker results as, on average, consumers spent 7.9% less than the same day in 2008 according to the National Retail Federation.**
The jury is still out for how the holiday season will fare for online retail. Given the data provided so far, as well as the fact that some key retailers like Wal-Mart are not disclosing sales until after the holiday season, a conclusion cannot be fully drawn until Q1 of 2010. Until then, let’s hope the positive reports and trend projections prevail and we see a successful 2009 holiday shopping season.
