Talking Tech with Rise’s Founder and CEO Jon Morris, One of Crain’s Tech 50

Crain’s Chicago recently announced its Tech 50 list, honoring the “50 people you should know in Chicago tech.” We’re thrilled that our founder and CEO, Jon Morris, was named to the list, which noted our agency’s explosion in the past five years, with a ninefold increase in revenue and headcount.

Below, Jon answers a few questions about the state of Chicago’s tech community, Rise’s investment in technology and innovation, and where he sees the industry going in the next few years.

Q. Since founding Rise in 2004, how have you seen Chicago’s tech community evolve?

Chicago’s tech community is booming. It’s been thrilling to see the formation of start-up incubators such as 1871 and the growth of networks like Built In Chicago as the city solidifies its position as a technology hot spot. Not only is more capital flowing into the city, there is an influx of talented individuals moving into Chicago and abundant opportunities for homegrown talent. It’s been amazing to watch the transformation.

Q. What is your strategy for continuing to lead and innovate in the space?

Our proprietary Interactive Investment Management® approach is a philosophy, methodology, and suite of tools that uses the principles of financial portfolio management to drive business results through smarter marketing investments. As we work with brands, we’re laser focused on answering two key questions: 1) how do we best allocate clients’ marketing dollars? and 2) how can we provide the most meaningful experiences possible for their customers?

Q. What do you see as the biggest emerging trend for today’s marketers?

The digital landscape continues to evolve, providing even more opportunities for marketers. With the onset of true personalization capabilities and advanced attribution and analytics, brands are able to reach their customers on a 1:1 level and understand exactly how their customers are engaging with their brand.

Q. What makes you proudest to be a part of Chicago’s tech community?

I grew up in Chicago and watching its technology growth has been nothing short of fascinating. When I founded Rise, we were a small start-up and the ability to work alongside smart, talented, and motivated individuals has helped push our team to continue to innovate and bring solutions and ideas to life. It’s also been incredibly rewarding to see individuals I’ve coached and mentored grow within the tech space and take advantage of the amazing resources and opportunities Chicago provides.
